Bookipedia Exhibition

Today we did our Bookipedia Exhibition. I worked with Telaina and Emma to create a replica of Hana's Suitcase. We wrote a story based on Hana's Suitcase and put it into the suitcase we used too. Here is a photo of our finished exhibition.

Athletics Reflection

Yesterday we had our annual School Athletics. We got given these questions to reflect on. Here they are:
    • What was the most enjoyable part of athletics for you? Why? The most enjoyable part was probably seeing everybody cheering on their house in the relay, the 800/400/200 metre races and other events. Everybody was having fun because the whole school got into it.
    • What are you really proud of? Why? I am really proud of myself for winning long jump because last year I got second and I made a goal to come first and I did. I need to push on with my long jump because Emma M wasn't far behind.
    • What was the most challenging part? Why? The most challenging part was pushing myself through asthma in the 800 metre race especially because I forgot my inhaler. Next time I want to REMEMBER my inhaler!
    • Where to now? What are your goals for next time? Why do you want to focus on this? My goal for next time is to win the shot-put because this time I came second to Emily S and I was about 3 inches away from her so I know I can do it.

T4 Book Buddies

This term we have continued book buddies. My book buddy is Aria. This term we have a selection of biographies to read. So far I have read 3. The books I read were Eighty Dollar Champion, Hana's Suitcase, and Hiding Edith. These are my goals

 - help others to understand my opinion by including evidence
  and examples

- building on someone else’s idea by starting with “I
   agree/disagree…..because…”

- making generalisations such as “All...” “Most…” “Some..”  “No/Never…”

PrEP - Market Day

For the end of last term and the start of this term we have been doing PrEP. PrEP was the preparation for Market Day, which was held on Friday 11th of November at RSS. All of us in Poutama got into groups of three. There had to be someone who would watch the budget, someone who would handle the money and calculate expenses, and someone who would make sure the product got finished and everything was organised. Once we had found our group we decided on a product we would make for Market Day. My group was me, Emma, and Telaina. We decided to make Candy Cane Christmas Trees. Here is a photo of our finished product.

Each group got a Google Slide with an example budget and a real budget. We also filled in the process we went through to make our product, and anything we needed to know. At the end we added 4 more slides with reflective questions, which we answered in our groups. Here is the slide we were given.

Persuasive Writing

This term our focus is persuasive writing. We chose to do an advertisement promoting a box. I chose mine to be a Radio Ad because I thought it would challenge me more than a TV ad.

The things I think make a good radio ad are...
  1. Words that create a sense of urgency.
  2. Something that will draw people in.
  3. Good expression and confidence when speaking

Calendar Art - T3 2016

This term we have been making art. It is called Drunkards Path. At first we saw a picture on the internet and thought it would be cool to make our own. We made some patterned papers and then we cut them out and stuck them together. I decided that I wanted to make lots of circles for my art, but there were other choices too - see Here and Here to see some other types.

Friday Challenge

Suzanne's nephew is going on a long flight to the UK.  He loves animals.  On the plane, he needs something that he can play with and keep him occupied in a small space.  The pieces have to be able to be stored flat in a snaplock bag that can go in his pocket.  

3 possibilities to prototype are:
  1. Animal puzzle
  2. Animal dice net
  3. Animal shapes



I have chosen Prototype #1   because: I think that Suzanne's nephew will like it.

E T Reo Portfolio Post

In E T Reo we have been learning a whakatauki. A whakatauki is a proverb, or a quote, usually very motivational or inspirational. This is the whakatauki we learnt.

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.
What is the most important thing in the world? The people, the people, the people.

To go with this whakatauki we did some art of people. Here is the end product.


Feedback: It's good that you learned what a proverb is.
Feedforward: I don't have any feedforward.

Evaluation:Overall I think I did well at this. I think that I was good at remembering it in Maori and English. I also learnt what a proverb is.

Writing Sample - Sentences

In writing I have been focusing on sentences. I have been learning to use different types of sentences to make my writing more interesting. Here is a Slide that I made with different sentence types in it.

Math Sample - Mathex

On Friday we did MATHEX!TM. MATHEX!TM is a competition for most year groups. You enter teams of four and working together, you need to answer some practical questions and 20 quickfire questions. This year, my team came 2nd overall Year 5. Here is an example of a MATHEX!TM question. Can you answer it???

A tank contains some petrol. When 24 litres are added the total quantity of petrol in the tank is 4 times as much as before. How many litres were originally in the tank?
Here is a list of all of the skills you should have to be successful at MATHEX!TM 
  • Math skills - you need to be good at maths.
  • Teamwork - you need to work with your team.
  • Think creatively - this will help in the practical questions
  • Read questions properly - questions aren't always what they seem.
I improved my teamwork - I was not really a person to take a backseat every once in a while

My next step will be to work on math questions that use clues as I am better at straight +-x/

SLC Reflection

Yesterday I did my SLC (student led conference) and I shared my learning with my family. Now, I have 3 questions to answer about how I think it went.

1) How do you think you did on your SLC? What was the highlight? I think I did really well on my SLC, my highlight was seeing my report and how much I had improved in things.



2) What did you do differently to make your SLC stand out? I tried to make my SLC sound easy flowing and a little bit funny so that it didn't feel like the SLC olympics. 



3) How will you make your Home Led Conference in Term 3 be awesome? What things might you do to make it awesome? I am going to make my home led conference awesome by having it all set up with a theme and everything.

Te Reo

Maths Test: Knowledge

Description: On Monday last week everyone in Poutama did a maths knowledge test. I did the stage 6 test. Last time I got 54%. This time I got 74%. Here is a picture of my completed test.

On Thursday Suzanne gave us a sheet of paper about Japan's "invisible train". She asked us 5 questions and we skimmed and scanned through the text to find the answers. Here is a photo of the article.

-has a good reputation, be from a trusted expert
-not ask you for private information or have virus warnings
-contain the keywords/information you are looking for

Reading - Skimming & Scanning

Today I did a reading game that focuses on skimming and scanning. Skimming and scanning is when you look over the text quickly and look for the key words.



I think I did well at this because it took me less than a minute to get each answer correct.

Seed2Table

In Seed2Table last week we started our science experiments. My group decided to test which source of liquid makes plants grow faster. We used

  • Fizzy
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Hot Water
  • Normal Water
  • Dye
We think that the plant with fizzy will die. What do you think???

We also did some cooking. We made corn fritters, tomato salsa, kale chips, potato chips, and apple crumble. I enjoyed the whole meal and am looking forward to our next session.

I think I did really well, especially since I finished with time to spare. Although I finished in time I think that it was a little bit less accurate.

Maths

Today in maths I have been working on ratio problems. For example, lets say I was making lolly bags for a fair, and I put 3 green lollies and 1 red lolly in each bag. How many of each coloured lolly would I need to make 9 bags? Can you figure it out??? Here is a pic of the page I was working on.

Maths

Today in maths we focused on mixed fractions, improper fractions, and converting them into either a mixed or improper fraction. Here is a pic of my group's working out.


I think I did really well at this. Next time I could maybe put my suggestions out there more.

Handwriting

Last week we did a handwriting sample. We had 5 minutes to copy down a poem. The criteria was for it to be fast, legible, and accurate. Here is a pic of my sample.


I think my sample was accurate and legible but I need to work on speed.

Spelling

In the first week of school we did a spelling test of the 300 essential words. The first day we did half, and then the next day the other half. I got two Wrong and only because of some capital letters. Here is my completed test.



I think I did resonably well but I really need to get my capitals under control.

Seed2Table

Today our class did Seed2Table. We made pumpkin soup with flat bread, feijoa muffins, and pinwheel scones. After that we set the tables. This is what they looked like.


I think I did really well at making the feijoa muffins and I think I worked well with my group.


We also did the science part of it. Today it was planning our experiments for next week.  We also talked about how we could make plants grow at this time of year, and what plants do at this time of year.

Beautiful Oops

On Thursday Troy showed us a book called Beautiful Oops. My partner Phoebe gave me an oops (The part in Vivid) and I changed it into something cool. Here is a pic of what I made it into.


I think I did really well at this task although I had some trouble choosing just 1 idea.

Today in maths I did a fractions activity called Jelly Slice. In Jelly Slice you have to cut the Jelly so that each gold star is the only star in its section. Here is a pic.

Buddy Art

Description: Last term our class did some art with our buddies. There was a piece of art split into lots of  25cm by 25cm squares. Every person and their buddy got a blank one of those and a 3cm by 3cm picture of what we needed to draw. We practiced on an 18cm by 18cm piece of paper. When we had finished all of the squares we put them together and they made Sarah Platt Art. Here is the finished product.


Feedback: I think it looks really nice I like what you used to create the lovely art.
Feedforward: Next time you could put which one was yours. Anyways loved it <3

Evaluation: I think me and my buddy worked really well as a team. We would have one of us drawing on one side and the other opposite so that we didn't get into each others way. The hard part for me was getting the bushes into the right shape - they may look easy to draw when you're looking at the original version but it's actually quite hard.

Writing

Description: From the start of the year we have been writing stories. When we were finished all of them we chose the one we thought was best to publish. I have chosen my camp writing, which is in a day in the life of a camp toilet.

Day in the Life of a Camp Toilet

Hi, it’s me. I don’t even know my name. Humans call me a “Toilet” Pfff, what sorta name is that. I’ll just call myself, myself. Anyway, that's enough about my name, it’s my job I want to tell you about. My job, day in, day out, my job, same time, same place, my job. Nobody knows what it’s like to be a toilet, except, of course, a toilet. Always in the same place as before, always. Just stuck there on the grimy ground. All we toilets have is our horrible disgusting job.


P.S - Are you sure you want to venture past this paragraph into the tragic woes of my job???


P.P.S - CAUTION: Putrid stuff ahead - do not read if you are not used to disgusting things - the content may cause weaker readers to collapse.


P.P.P.S - All spew damage will be at the expense of the person responsible. Camp Bookstm will take no responsibility whatsoever.


So here we go. I’m sitting in my cubicle, doing nothing, as per usual. When a human walks in. As the door swings open I catch a glimpse of Outside. The sun rays streaming in above the lush green grass. The sweet smell of honeysuckles amongst the trees. The immense silvery sea shimmering in the light. The breeze tickling me as the birds sing their own sweet song. But now it's gone. That whole world out there, waiting for me, has lost patience at last. The window to my world has closed.


I am prisoner in my own cubicle. I have never gotten used to being used and I don’t think I ever will. Lost in my thoughts I don’t see the two great big overgrown balloons lowering onto me. Now it’s too late, they are on me, and there is no way out.


I brace myself, preparing for the worst. Then it started. A trickle of yellow sludge oozes down my side, hissing as it moved. It slowed down to a steady drip, drop, drip, drop. Suddenly a strangled moaning sound erupts from the mouth of the human above me. A mysterious big brown blob is appearing, getting closer and closer until… it dropped, speeding like a bullet to land with a splash in the lake of lemonade. At long last, the human stands up. “Phew,” I thought “Another job done.” But I had spoken too soon.

“HURRICANE!!!!! My stomach, it’s tossing and turning like mad. What have I ever done to you world!?!?! What have I done!?!?!” I thought. But then it was over, and my stomach was empty. There you go. That's my job. And now it’s done. Wait, that's the door opening, and that's the tap of feet. A human strides in and lowers itself gingerly onto me. “Here we go again.”



Feedback/Feedforward: I like how you have made it really funny but next time you could make your paragraphs shorter. Charlotte H


Evaluation: Thanks Charlotte, I will take that onboard for next time. I agree that I need to make my paragraphs shorter. Other than that I think I have done really well, especially while explaining the outside bit.

Whakapapa

Description: In class we have been making our family tree, or our Whakapapa. I went up to my great great grandparents. When we were finished we labeled each person in Maori. For example Uncle would be Matua Keke. Then we chose how to present it. I did mine online on a website called Family Echo. I had to split it into 2 photos because the whole thing would not fit on the screen - the bottom pic is supposed to be on the bottom right corner.



Feedback/Feedforward: I think you did really well but next time you can do more of your family tree. Charlotte H

Evaluation: Overall I think I did pretty well at finding info and putting it together, but I do agree with Charlotte that I should try and do more of it next time.

Camp 2016

Description: On the 8th of March all the year 5/6 kids went to El Rancho in Waikanae for school camp. There were 10 activities, consisting of the pool, Archery, Mini Golf, Waterslide, Rifles, Horses, Low Ropes, Kayaks, Rafts and Team Initiatives. We were split into activity groups and completed all of them in the duration of camp.

OneWord 2016

Description: In class we each made a OneWord. OneWord is a goal you want to work towards this year. My OneWord is Consistency. I chose this word because I want to be consistently doing well all-round. I drew the letters to represent me.

Active Listening

Description: In class we decided to create a movie to show our understanding of Active, Busy and Me Too Listening.


Big Idea: I learnt that to be Active Listening you have to make eye contact.

Treaty Of Waitangi Kahoot

Description:
In class we decided that we were going to do something about the Treaty of Waitangi. First we gathered info, then we made it into something that showed our understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Big Idea:
I learnt a lot of facts like the Treaty was written in English then translated into Maori, and that there were more chiefs that refused to sign the treaty than kids in my class.

Evaluation:
Overall I think I did really well at finding facts. Next time I think I will try a 3D model instead of a Kahoot.

I would rate myself at the Multi stage on the Rubric below because I gethered three or more facts but they weren't connected so it couldn't be relational, next time I will be aiming for that.
